Tomorrow night is the night!
We will be meeting in the student organizations area on the 2nd floor of the Commons and may possibly migrate to a different room if I can get it sorted out tomorrow.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there and lets all get to know each other a little better!
Tonight’s Practice October 20, 2008

I thought we had a great practice tonight. There were some good matches going on all around and we established the foundation of the club. Thanks to everyone who came out and listened to everything we had to say and especially to those who paid their dues tonight!
I look forward to next Monday when we will start doing some drills and refining skills for the badminton team!

Hopefully, with the start of the badminton team and a structured practice (for Mondays at least), we will turn a new leaf for badminton at UMBC.
Just a reminder to everyone coming tonight, please bring your $5 dues to keep our wonderful club running, and to think about joining the team. Any skill level can join the team, what we are looking for is dedication meaning come to every Monday practice so we can reinforce skills taught prior.
To all of the alumni, unfortunately the IBA will only allow undergrad, grad, and part-time students to participate in sanctioned games.
As mentioned in an earlier post, I will be handing out some guidelines to follow during practice and it will also be posted here after practice tonight. The club will be going from a relaxed, recreational practice to a more competitive and skilled practice.

Dues and such October 16, 2008

So each sports club is allocated a certain amount of money each semester. They must make back 10% of the budget allocated to them in order to be eligible to recieve money next semester. The officers decided that a fundraiser would not work too well so we decided to impose a $5 due for members of the badminton club. This due is a small price to pay for the continued development of the badminton club. The dues ensure that we will have a steady supply of birdies and equipment as they deteriorate due to wear and tear. We will begin collecting dues on Monday so please come prepared with $5 to contribute towards the embetterment of the club.
Any further donations will be greatly appreciated. All financial transcations will be transparent and available upon request to any members.
Another note, don’t forget to RSVP for the club social!!!
Couple of Notes October 15, 2008

After some consideration, the officers have decided we would like to pursue membership in the Intercollegiate Badminton Association. This would entail setting up a team to compete with other schools in the northeast region and potentially play against other national schools in the Spring at the championships. If anyone is interested in joining the UMBC Badminton Team, please drop a comment here or shoot an email to me (ew3@umbc.edu) or Hubert (whubert1@umbc.edu).
If you are interested in joining the UMBC Badminton Team please note that we will be holding serious practices that involve physical activity beyond hitting the bird (running, footwork drills, etc). This is a good oppurtunity for those who would like to get better and travel with a team to hopefully crush some competition! When we do travel, because of the lack of funds (unless we fundraise… hint hint), team members may have to contribute a little.
Also, we are planning a get together so that we can all get to know each other better. There will be pizza, refreshments, and good company. Please RSVP ASAP so we know how much pizza to order!!!! The tentative date is October 28th at 7:30pm, location TBA.

Now that the UMBC badminton club has been redesigned (does linking to a blog count as a redesign?), I hope that we can turn the UMBC badminton community into a more close knit one while at the same time expanding to recruit more players!
After todays practice, we currently have 4 semi-regulation courts so we would like to put those to good use. The officers are currently deliberating on how to partition the court space so that those who want to play games can play games, and those who wish to just hit around can do so while granting everyone equal time on the courts.
We will be introducing a “Club Rules” handout next Monday in hopes of organizing the playtime a little better.
As far as Fridays go, Michelle (Treasurer) and I (Eric) will try to make it to as many of the practices as we can, but none of the other officers will be able to attend. I have not heard any complaints about Friday practices yet so that’s great news.
One last note, don’t be afraid to ask people to play games! I see lots of people playing with just a set group of 4 and we encourage more intermingling. It helps everyone to play with different people.

Sorry for the late notice on the site, but to all who didn’t receive the email, we are holding our first practice in the RAC from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We will introduce the officers and discuss the plans for the school year. See you all there!

The previous officers neglected to add our current president to the mailing list over the summer so we weren’t able to request a practice time so they stuck us in a random Friday night slot. Now UMBC is mostly commuters coupled with residents that go home on the weekends so that is a death slot for any club and none of the officers can attend. We are currently appealing to get a practice on Monday evenings.
PS – Biochemistry sucks.

With the start of the 2008-2009 school year at UMBC, I would like to introduce the new, brand-spanking, official UMBC Badminton Club Homepage/Blog/News site. First off, the officers for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 year will be as follows:
- President: Hubert Wu
- Vice President: Yours truly, Eric Wong
- Treasurer: Michelle Chen
- Secretary: Andrew Nhan
The goal of this blog/site… I think I will just call it a site from this point on, is to educate the masses at UMBC about how great of a sport badminton truly is. My ambition is to have this site be a repository for great badminton videos, local and international badminton news, tips from badminton experts, and musings from members of the badminton club.
